How long has the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) been around? How long has it been in Long Beach?

The Muscular Dystrophy Association was established in 1950. The Southeast Los Angeles Chapter of the MDA Long Beach has been in the city of Long Beach for over 8 years.

Describe the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Tell us a little about your nonprofit, your mission, the people you serve or your goals.

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.

How is Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) different from similar nonprofits?

Services and programs include providing care at medical clinics, facilitating support groups, summer camp, assistance with the purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces and funding research to seek treatments and cures for over 40 neuromuscular diseases.

What is the most rewarding part of running Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in Long Beach?

What are the challenges you face — as a nonprofit, as an advocacy group, or in your industry?

Building awareness.

Upcoming events include the KCAL 9 Labor Day Telethon September 6-7.

How can people get involved with the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Long Beach? What do you need — volunteers, donations, etc?

There are many ways to help in the fight against neuromuscular diseases: Donations in-kind and monetary, volunteer or become a sponsor of an event.

Concerned individuals and organizations can make a donation to fund:

  • $30 – Flu Shot
  • $82 – 1 Minute of Research
  • $100 – Support Group Session
  • $800 – Child to MDA Summer Camp
  • $2,000 – Assist with Wheelchair or Leg Braces
  • $4,000 – Cabin of 5 friends at MDA Summer Camp
