Spotlight on Precision Property Measurements in Long Beach
2012-04-02 · By Editor
EverythingLongBeach recently spoke with Andy McFarland, President of Precision Property Measurements , via email. They talked about inspirations, challenges and what’s it’s like having a business in 4th St. Corridor .
How long have you been in business?
PPM was founded in January of 2002, so that makes it just over ten years!
Precision Property Measurements (PPM) is a full-service building measurement and CAD drafting firm, specializing in the creation of ”As-Built” architectural floor plans and site plans. We create As-Built plans for anyone in need of real property dimensions and data, including architects, designers, contractors, commercial property and facility managers, and homeowners.
Why did you start Precision Property Measurements ?
I had taken a voluntary severance at my previous job (investment banking with Morgan Stanley) because I didn’t like it and wanted to do something else. So I moved back to Long Beach (from New York) and screwed around for awhile (cross country road trip, learned to surf, etc…) and after about 6 months I asked my best friend if he’s let me join him in his business, which at the time was just him by himself.
I was attracted to it because I wasn’t ready to get back into finance, but it was time to get a job because my severance funds were running out! I was definitely excited by the idea of working with my best friend in a small business, and I also was attracted by the work itself – working outdoors, being on your feet all day, and using math and geometry. I didn’t ever think it would be something I did for now 10 years running
What makes Precision Property Measurements stand out?
By focusing exclusively on the process of creating as-builts, PPM is able to offer an advantage over traditional as-built options. PPM’s proprietary as-built production system uses precise measuring technology, a highly trained staff, and tight standards and controls to ensure accuracy, consistency and quality on every plan.
What is the biggest success Precision Property Measurements has had?
We are having it every day – still here and growing stronger after 10 years. 2008 and 2009 were very tough times but everyone on the team stuck together and worked hard to make the changes that are now bearing fruit. There is no single event I would point to – our success has been the result of perseverance and hard work over the long run, and always making sure our customers are happy with our work.
What is your favorite part of running your business?
I love it when something works the way its supposed to. My favorite thing is to see a problem, and then come up with a repeatable system that fixes it so it never happens again. When you run your own business you never have to accept something that you don’t like.
What unique talents do you bring to Precision Property Measurements ?
I think my biggest strength is that I am balanced – I never get too high when things are going well, or too low when things are falling apart. I think it’s important for employees to see steadiness and consistency coming from the leader of the company.
My dad always tells me that in his first job out of college, the owner would always start the day by opening the mail to check how many orders they received that day. If they received a lot of orders, it was high fives, jokes, and good times for everyone all day. But if the orders were low, the boss was a mess and everyone was on pins and needles all day, afraid to upset him. My dad says that before long everyone dreaded even coming to work in the morning because they were afraid what kind of day it would be. That lesson has always stuck with me.
How is Precision Property Measurements involved with the community?
I just joined the Long Beach Rotary in January this year and so far I am really enjoying it, so I am confident that over time this will be a bigger and bigger part of my life.
Do you have any future plans for Precision Property Measurements ?
My goal is for PPM to be the biggest independent As-Built surveying company in the U.S. We have a LONG way to go.
What is the best advice that you received and who did it come from?
I don’t think it gets any better than the Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If you stick with that basic tenet of respect for others you will be just fine.
