The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word founded the hospital and continue their mission by providing the best, highest quality health services for everyone.

The story of St. Mary Medical Center began on October 25, 1866, when three brave founding members of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word arrived in Galveston, TX. On April 1, 1867 the Sisters opened Charity Hospital, later to be called St. Mary’s Infirmary. It was the first Catholic hospital in the state of Texas.

Over the years, the Congregation spread its ministries to other cities, states, and nations. In August 1923, six Sisters arrived in Long Beach to take over the management and ownership of the original hospital built by Dr. T.O. Boyd.

The Sisters renamed it St. Mary’s Hospital, and on September 26, 1923 St. Mary’s Hospital was dedicated. This was the beginning of decades of hard work, ministry, and healthcare delivery. The hospital was able to withstand challenges including earthquake destruction in 1933 and the Great Depression.

St. Mary Medical Center has been a pillar of the greater Long Beach community and a quality hospital throughout the years. Recently, St. Mary Medical Center has earned several quality distinctions, including four consecutive years of Maternity Excellence (2010-2013), two consecutive years of Patient Safety Excellence (2012-2013), and two consecutive years of Stroke Care Excellence (2011-2012) from Healthgrades; a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, a CIGNA Bariatric Center of Excellence designation, and a Blue DistinctionÒ Center for Cardiac Care designation.

St. Mary Medical Center is located at 1050 Linden Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90813
