EverythingLongBeach recently spoke with Darrell Stempke, Owner of Stempke Marketing Partners, via email. They talked about inspirations, challenges and what’s it’s like growing up in Long Beach and building a business in that serves all of Southern California — virtually.
How long have you been in business?
We’ve been in business since September 2009 and recently launched our website in April 2010—www.daycare-compare.com.
Describe your business:
Our business is offering better marketing solutions for daycares with a strong focus in the California region. In today’s economy, daycares need all the opportunities available to ensure they have enough enrollments. Now, daycares need to compete with 10% unemployment, let alone other daycares.
Why did you start Stempke Marketing Partners?
My wife and I were looking for a daycare and had difficulty finding information on existing daycare listing websites. The technology used was old, the layout was not intuative, and we though, “we can do better!”
What makes Daycare-Compare.com stand out?
First is the search engine. Other sites allow you to search by zip code or area code alone. I wanted to know how close daycares were to my street address, so that was the first option implemented. Additionally, we are the first to use advanced search options, such as adding a work address to the search, narrowing by dropoff and pickup times, or even by religious values taught. I was raised through St. Barnabas and St. Anthony in Long Beach, so I know that is an important part of many families’ decision.
What is the biggest success you’ve had on Daycare-Compare.com?
The integration of maps onto the website has been one of the most successful additions, thus far. When searching by your home and work address, it’s helpful for parent’s to see their commute path and choose and compare daycares along their drive as well as near their home or work.
What is your favorite part of running this type of business?
I like knowing that we can offer a service that is helpful to both the daycares looking for more enrollments as well as the parents that need help narrowing their search. Finding a daycare is one of the most important decision facing many parents, and we get to help them be more informed and make a good decision.
What are the biggest challenges you face with Stempke Marketing Partners?
We are working hard to increase the daycare members we have listed on the site. In order to provide a mutual value to the parents and daycares, there needs to be an optimal amount of daycares. Recently, we’ve sent 150 letters to Long Beach daycares to let them know about this opportunity. In addition, we pool all membership fees to attract parents through Google and Facebook advertisments. These two efforts will help overcome this challenge.
What unique talents do you bring to Stempke Marketing Partners?
I’m lucky to have recieved a great education through St. Barnabas, St. Anthony, and California State University, Long Beach. That education lead me to a career in business consulting at a successful firm in Orange County. Managing Fortune 500 strategic objectives gives me a unique insight that I can provide to small business operations.
How is Stempke Marketing Partners involved with the community?
I have served on the Alumni Board of Trustees for a Long Beach organization in years past. I have also volunteered at the Long Beach Marathon for the past 3 years.
Do you have any future plans for Daycare-Compare.com?
Although our site is open for web traffic all over the world, we have focused all of our efforts to Southern California. Eventually, we will look to provide listing services to all of the United States.
What is the best advice that you received and who did it come from?
Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes one to start a business. I’ve looked to my friends and family for support, ideas, brainstorms, and feedback. I’ve been very appreciative of my extended network of friends and family in Long Beach.
