Children discover a summer of fun at kids camps

summer camp for kidsWhat are you doing for your summer vacation? Give your kids something to write about in September by sending them to a Summer Day Camp. Several local youth organizations are offering fun camps for kids at locations throughout Long Beach.

Whether your child likes music, acting, ocean adventures, or sports there is a camp to fufill their summer fantasies.

Sign-ups are already underway for camps at the Aquarium, the Nature Center and other City parks. Keep reading for more information about fun things to do for your child this summer.

Summer Day Camps at the Aquarium

Dive into day camp at the Aquarium of the Pacific.  Experience the wonder of marine life through hands-on activities, experiments, animal interactions, and more.  Whether your child is three-years-old or a teenager, we have a day camp just for them!

  • Fish Fry Camp: A camp experience made especially for you and your three to four-year-old.
  • Sea Squirt Camp: Five and six-year-olds explore the ocean in this camp designed to keep your jiggling jelly busy!
  • Ocean Adventure Camp: Second to fourth grade students are immersed in the excitement of marine science in this camp.
  • Junior Biologist Camp: Dive deeper into marine biology in this camp for fourth to seventh grade students.
  • Marine Science Sleepover Camp: Let your seventh to ninth grade student spend a week AND a night at the Aquarium!

Summer Day Camps from LB Parks

Kids can enjoy a summer of fun-filled activities in a safe, supervised environment in the Summer Day Camp Programs from the City of Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Department. Registration is ongoing and has already begun.

Long Beach Summer Day Camps are open Monday through Friday, 9-4p.m, between June 21 and August 27. Weekly fees for the programs run $90 to $130 (aquatics camps run $105- $145 per week). To help working parents, extended day care hours are available, 7-9a.m. and 4-6p.m, for an extra $25 per week for the a.m or p.m session.

Four Long Beach parks will offer Summer Day Camps where kids 5 to 12 years old will keep busy with games, arts and crafts, field trips (extra fee), beach visits, and a variety of other activities. Cost for the day camps is $90 per week and sign ups are underway at:

  • El Dorado West Park, 2800 Studebaker Rd (562) 570-3225 (June 21- Sept 3)
  • Silverado Park, 1545 W. 31st., (562)570-1675 (June 21-Sept3)
  • Stearns Champions Park, 4520 E. 23rd St., (562)570-1685
  • Veterans Park, 101 E. 28th St., (562)570- 1695. Ages 5-8.

Preschool youngsters, ages 5-8, are welcome at the Pee Wee Camp just for them. Cost for the Pee Wee camps is $90 per week and sign-ups are underway at Wardlow Park, 3457 Stanbridge Ave., (562) 570-1705.

For budding actors and artists, 5-12 years old, recreation leaders at Whaley Park, 5620 Atherton St., (562) 570-1710, will host the popular Music and Arts Camp. Young campers will take part in art, set design, acting, signing, and dancing projects as well as participates in games, crafts and sports. They’ll join camp staff in producing and performing original plays for parents and friends. The $100 fee includes materials.

Kids play a different sport every week in the Hi-Five Sports Camp at Pan American Park, 5157 Centralia St. (562) 570-1660. Youngsters will practice new athletic skills, learn the value of teamwork and good sportsmanship, and engage in activities to promote physical fitness. Cost of the sport camp is $90 per week.

Kids can have a great time in the water this summer at Belmont Plaza Pool. The Belmont Junior Aquatics Camp will take place at Belmont Plaza Pool, 4000 Olympic Plaza, (562) 570-1888, June 21- Sept 3, ages 5-8, kindergarten experience required , (extended day care available 7-9) and 4-6pm at additional cost $25-$50 per week). All field trips are at an additional cost.
