So Cal Native Susan Egan Comes to Carpenter Center’s Cabaret
2010-09-14 · By Editor
The audience will share the stage—literally—with Broadway star Susan Egan, as Egan opens the 2010/11 Cabaret Series at Carpenter Performing Arts Center with a powerhouse two-night stand of timeless musical numbers in performances tailored for the cabaret into which the Carpenter Center’s stage will be transformed. Egan performs on Wednesday and Thursday, September 29 & 30, with pre-show dinner served.
The fact that Egan has spent more time that any performer in Broadway history starring as Sally Bowles in Cabaret is a good indication of just how ready-made the Carpenter Center’s Cabaret Series is to showcase Egan’s prodigious talents. But one glance at her resume reveals that this is just the tip of the musical iceberg. On Broadway Egan originated the roles of Leonide in Triumph of Love and Belle in Beauty and the Beast (a performance that earned her Tony and Drama Desk nominations for “Best Actress”); and she has starred as Margy in State Fair and most recently as Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Egan has also logged regional time with Tommy Tune in the national tour of Bye, Bye Birdie and starred alongside the legendary Carol Burnett in Putting It Together. Additionally, Egan has headlined over 50 symphonies worldwide, including concerts at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Hollywood Bowl.
Local residents may have been lucky enough to catch Egan on stage over the years, as this graduate of the Orange County High School of the Arts and UCLA reprised her role of Belle for the Los Angeles premiere of Beauty and the Beast, as well as developing works for South Coast Repertory and the Mark Taper Forum. But never have audiences had a chance to experience Egan’s talent and charisma with the degree of intimacy afforded by the Carpenter Center’s cabaret-style set-up, where every seat in the house is onstage with the performer.
“This is a unique opportunity to get a close-up view of a performer who has the ability to project to the back of a concert hall,” says the Michelle Roberge, the Carpenter Center’s executive director. “Getting a star like Susan Egan to come to our cabaret is exactly the kind of event we hope for when putting together a season of our Cabaret Series.”
You’ll recognize her from TV & film roles, but Susan Egan is a Broadway star, whose roles include Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Sally Bowles in Cabaret, and the title role in Thoroughly Modern Millie. A Southern California native, Susan delivers an electrifying, powerhouse performance that leaves audiences cheering!
The Susan Egan performance is Wednesday, September 29 and Thursday, September 30; Dinner 6 – 6:45PM | Performance at 7PM at the carpenter Performing Arts Center 6200 Atherton Street, Long Beach, 90815.
