12th Annual Team Spirit Breast & Ovarian Cancer 10K Walk Raises Record Amount

More than 1,200 people came together on Sat., Sept. 24 to bring awareness to breast and ovarian cancer by walking in the 12th Annual Team Spirit Breast and Ovarian Cancer 10K Walk. Team Spirit started and ended in the parking lot of McKenna’s on the Bay, the official location sponsor, where the Long Beach Fire Department sounded their siren to signal the beginning of the Walk.
More than $300,000 was raised from Team Spirit, the largest amount ever in its 12-year history. Money was raised in the months leading up to the Walk through individual and team fundraising pages, sponsorships, small fundraising events and a new summer benefit concert. Ralphs®, the title sponsor, provided refreshments and food and Farmers & Merchant Bank offered an early packet pick-up location the weekend prior. Proceeds from the Walk will benefit psychosocial cancer support programs at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute (TCI) at Long Beach Memorial.
“Team Spirit is instrumental is sustaining valuable psychosocial cancer support programs at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute. When someone has cancer it’s important to take care of the ‘whole person,’ says Randal Snyder, co-manager, Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support & Education, MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Memorial. “Team Spirit brings the Long Beach community together to celebrate hope and show support to women who are newly diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors.”
The celebratory mood of Team Spirit was reflected through up-beat music and awards that were given after the Walk to the most-spirited team and the top fundraising teams and individuals.
Team Spirit helps fund important psychosocial programs, such as Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support and Education – a peer-mentoring program, support groups, social workers and the addition of a nurse navigator to TCI. The peer-mentoring program is for newly diagnosed gynecologic and breast cancer patients, matching them with a specially trained cancer survivor. The gynecologic and breast support groups utilize an open format, providing opportunities to share individual stories, learn ways to reduce stress and enhance coping skills while focusing on adaptive and empowering attitudes. These programs are available to anyone in the greater Long Beach community seeking cancer support services regardless of their financial status.
