Texas Man Booked for Murder and Attempted Murder in Connection With Sunday Morning Shooting

crime-scene-tape victim, identified as 38-year-old John EvansOn Sunday, October 17, 2010, at approximately 12:06 a.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department responded to a “shots fired” call in the 1900 block of Pine Avenue, which resulted in the death of a male adult and the injuring of a second victim.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Elbert Haskins from Texas, and the victims, were at the residence of a friend when they became involved in a verbal dispute. Suspect Haskins pulled out a handgun and fired it, striking the victims, and then fled from the location.

One victim, identified as 38-year-old John Evans of San Pedro, was struck in the upper body. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased a short time later. The second victim, identified as a 16-year-old male from Long Beach was struck in the upper body and also transported. At this time, his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

The immediate follow-up investigation led officers to a residence in the 700 block of East Pacific Coast Highway where Suspect Haskins was located and arrested. He has been booked for murder and attempted murder, and is being held at the Long Beach City Jail without bail. The reason for the dispute is still under investigation.
