The Children’s Theatre of Long Beach Welcome All Ages to Audition for “The Velveteen Rabbit”
2014-08-08 · By Editor
An original musical adaptation of Margery Williams’ classic children’s story, The Velveteen Rabbit, is being produced by The Children’s Theatre of Long Beach. With roles open for performers and actors of all ages, the Children’s Theatre of Long Beach mainstage shows are terrific opportunities for families and friends to work together to tell great and meaningful stories.
The Velveteen Rabbit, with music and lyrics by Erik Pryztulski, was adapted for the stage by Bethany Price, who will be directing this production. Originally presented by Minnie Gant Elementary School less than 10 years ago, the show has now seen a half dozen productions throughout the United States, including productions in Virginia, Pennsylvania and an upcoming show in Florida in March. This adaptation is very faithful to the story, message and themes of Williams’ beautiful bedtime tale, which tells the story of a stuffed rabbit made of velveteen fur, and the young boy who loved it. The story is set in 1920s America, and features a cast of characters that includes several members of the boy’s family, a Nursery Magic Fairy, a trusted nanny, rabbits, toy soldiers, and a whole closet full of toys. Long before Toy Story brought movie audiences a sneak peak into the secret life of toys, Velveteen Rabbit explored the nature, power and sacrifice of love through the conversations toys had behind the toy cabinet doors. A full range of characters including a Model Boat, a Race Car, a Spinning Top, Raggedy Ann and Andy, the Skin Horse, Velveteen and multiple blocks and toy soldiers discuss, debate, and sing and dance in this musical, and need actors young and old to bring them to life.
