The Deli News: Perfect Pizza for a Penny Pincher
2012-01-30 · By Chandra Clewley
How many of us hit Trader Joe’s once or twice a week to stock up? I am willing to bet, quite a few. Usually, it is right after work, and you are exhausted, and probably don’t feel like cooking. Well, I am here to tell you, there is an answer to your prayers. Right next door. Or at least, a few doors down!
We noticed several people carrying pizza boxes to their cars about a year ago and decided we had to get to the bottom of it, which is what brought us to the Deli News in the first place. Now look, if you are expecting white table cloths and candlelight with your pizza, this isn’t the place for you. It is a big bright and crowded cafeteria style room, with large murals of Venice on the wall and a toy machine to keep the kids occupied. It’s loud and the line can be long. But once you see the menu, I am willing to bet you will try it out. The $5 medium size one topping pizza is not a typo. And the rest of the prices are on par with that.
Once you have made it to the front, some of the items to consider are the Antipasto Salad, the Ravioli, the Lasagna and of course, the medium Pizza. The service is great, and the business is obviously family run. That is plain to see because of their hours of operation. The Deli News is closed on the weekends. Also, when you are ordering, take into consideration the sign that says their microwave has been broken for 20 years. It might take a few minutes to get your food.
Once you have ordered, find a spot to sit down or order it to go. We always sit. They are so sweet here, they actually saw that my husband was holding the baby and brought out the highchair. I had to laugh…it isn’t the kind of highchair you might be used to seeing. As a matter of fact, I am not sure how old it is, but it is certainly not new. Either way, it was clean and I was fine with putting the baby in it.
It has never taken longer than 15 minutes to receive our order, and it has always been yummy. Their pizza, for $5, is honestly, good. It tastes like your local, neighborhood restaurant, and that is how this place makes you feel….like you are a local…or you are in on a secret that only the locals know about.
Oh, and to top it off, not only are the prices great, the food good and the service awesome, but they serve beer and wine. Life is complete.
Seriously, try this place out. It is solid on all counts. But one caveat, it is cash only! I am betting if you clean out the change in your car ashtray, you can afford it.
