christine-janusEverythingLongBeach recently spoke with Christine Janus, Owner of The Extreme Consultant, via email. They talked about inspirations, challenges and what’s it’s like having a business in Belmont Shore / Belmonth Heights.

How long have you been in business?:

I launched my business in 2001.

Describe The Extreme Consultant:

The primary focus of my business is to provide technical support for small to medium sized businesses. These are people who either don’t have the budget and/or need for a full time technical support staff. We provide that for them. We also design and maintain websites, provide hosting services and domain name registration.

Why did you start The Extreme Consultant?

I worked for several large companies in the Information Technology Depts and saw a need to provide service like this to small businesses. I have always enjoyed working with computers and love to put my expertise to good use helping others.

What makes The Extreme Consultant stand out?

My clients have often praised me for our reliability. We show up when promised, keep in touch if there is a delay, and treat our customers with respect. We provide the answers and solutions they need to run their business. We believe in helping our clients achieve their goals.

What is the biggest success The Extreme Consultant has had?

I am very proud of my business accomplishments over the years. Unfortunately, not all my clients will stay with me and move on for different reasons. For instance, one client grew his business to the point he needed to hire a full-time technical person. I helped him with this transition, knowing that I would be losing a client. Because of the professional manner in which I handled this potentially awkward situation, this client returned to me years later, when their organization changed again and needed help. I am a firm believer in maintaining a professional attitude at all times and this outlook has benefited me well.

What is your favorite part of running your business?

I love working with computers so that is always a fun aspect but I also love meeting people. My work has given me the opportunity of visiting clients in a wide variety of industries. I love learning about their businesses and helping them achieve their goals.

What are the biggest challenges you face?

Some of my biggest challenges have ocurred during these uncertain economic times. My business has suffered because so many of my clients have been forced to cut back on the work they would normally have done. I am also sad to say that some of my clients have gone out of business and defaulted on money owed me. This has always been a small part of business but it seems to be especially tough right now.

What unique talents do you bring to The Extreme Consultant?

Most of my early education was received from on-the-job training with a large organization. I was like a sponge, trying to learn everything I could. It was many years later that I decided to go back to school and earn my degree in Computer Science to complement my experience and training. I also love to talk to people and this has helped me in obtaining new business. A wise friend once told me that “People like to do business with people they like”. I try to live that way.

How is The Extreme Consultant involved with the community?

I love my community and try to stay active in my neighborhood. I also volunteer one night a week at the Long Beach Police Dept Youth Services Division.

Do you have any future plans for The Extreme Consultant?

I would like to see my business expand and grow to a point that I can start delegating work and spend more time with marketing and sales.

What is the best advice that you received and who did it come from?

The best advice I have ever received was “Don’t burn any bridges”. You never know when your past will come back to haunt you and it’s best to end every relationship as if it is only a temporary separation.

One Last Thing:

I love being a business owner and I love being in Long Beach. This city has so much to offer and is very supportive of small business owners. I also am a member of the Long Beach Chamber and they have been wonderful in providing resources to help me succeed. My only regret is that I didn’t start my business sooner!
