Long Beach is Starting Line For Famed Transpac Yacht Race July 4 and July 8

Fifty-three entries from three nations will be setting sail from the shores of Long Beach Monday, July 4 and Friday, July 8 in the famed Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac), a grueling, 2,225-mile race to Hawaii that traces it beginnings back to 1906.

The start of the race, a 2011 Long Beach Sea Festival event, is staggered over the five days to allow the smaller, slower boats to arrive in Hawaii about the same time as the larger and faster boats. From the staging point in Rainbow Harbor, the smaller boats will start at 1 p.m. July 4, followed by the larger boats at 1 p.m. July 8.

An impressive sendoff ceremony, open to the public, accompanies each departure from the Pine Ave. Pier in Rainbow Harbor. KNX 1070 radio’s Ron Kilgore will read the names of each boat’s skipper and crew and, accompanied by Hawaiian music, each boat’s departure will be marked by a shot from a cannon. In addition, outrigger canoes will lead the boats out of the harbor.

For spectators, the best view of the large groups of departing boats is from the park above the bluffs at San Pedro’s Pt. Fermin.

Mayor Bob Foster will help kick off Transpac 2011 by hosting a reception for the competitors Saturday, July 2 at Gladstone’s.

The race course will take competitors though cold, wet northeastern Pacific waters, through doldrums, squalls and scorching heat, then to the blustery tradewinds of the Molokai Channel near the finish line off Oahu’s Diamond Head
