ogg-photographyEverythingLongBeach recently spoke with Vangie Ogg, owner of Vangie Ogg Photography, via email. They talked about inspirations, challenges and what’s it’s like having a photography studio in Bixby Knolls.

How long have you been in business? 5 years

Describe your business:

Vangie Ogg offers custom lifestyle photography specializing in children-newborns to teens. The sessions are held at the client’s home or favorite location, or at the studio which is shared with Pixie Toys in one unique space in family-friendly Bixby Knolls.

Why did you start Vangie Ogg Photography?

Photography has always been a big part of my life. Right out of college, I worked as an assistant then later became business partners with a Hollywood celebrity photographer in the 90’s. Living in LA, my work then was focused on actor’s headshots. This led to shooting children’s portfolio images for LA Models, Ford, and Wilhemina. I then quickly found my passion!

I eventually moved to Bixby Knolls (my husband’s hometown) to raise our 2 boys. I was a hands-on mom, and when the boys were older and had a little time for myself, I knew it was the right time to establish my photography business in Long Beach.

What makes Vangie Ogg Photography stand out?

I offer a personalized photography experience. They are fun and relaxed so that I am sure to capture each family member’s personality. I also offer several options to showcase the heirloom quality images from each session. Among them, large canvas prints, Coffee Table Books, and custom DVD slideshows set to music!

What is the biggest success Vangie Ogg Photography has had?

We survived moving our studio 3 times in the last 5 years, and now surviving this recession!

What is your favorite part of running a photography studio?

Having the families come back every year for portraits, and watching the kids grow. Also, I love it when clients become friends that I hang out with!

What are the biggest challenges you face?

As an artist, it took a long time to even consider myself as business owner. So everything was a big struggle. I now outsource my bookkeeping and “brand-keeping” and this has lightened the load.

What unique talents do you bring to Vangie Ogg Photography?

What I see through my lenses is uniquely mine.

How is Vangie Ogg Photography involved with the community?

The shop and studio actively participates in Bixby Knolls’ First Fridays. We also host free events such as Movie Night and Craft Days. We work with other family-friendly businesses to promote special events. We also donate items to the surrounding schools’ fundraisers.

Do you have any future plans for the photography studio?

I will offer photography workshops one for parents…to show them how to capture amazing pictures of their kids even with just a simple point-and-shoot camera. And another workshop for those who want to start a business their own portrait photography business.

What is the best advice that you received and who did it come from?

I’ve heard this from several professional photographers: Shoot only what you are passionate about, and everything else will fall into place.
