Walking is beneficial to your health, controlling your weight and improving your overall well-being. In partnership with the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department), Starr King Elementary School Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL) parent group will kick-off its Walking Club on Friday, October 16, 2009.
Walkers will join Vice Mayor Val Lerch in the kick-off walk starting at 8:15 am at Starr King Elementary School, 145 East Artesia Boulevard, Long Beach.
“I have started a personal program to eat healthier at my home, and I look forward to adding a walk into the program to further improve my healthy living lifestyle,” said Vice Mayor Lerch. “I look forward to the results of HEAL at Starr King, and I hope more schools follow in their footsteps — that would be great!”
Walking is a gentle, low-impact exercise that can easily transition people into a higher level of fitness and health. It’s safe, simple, doesn’t require practice, and has many health benefits. Walking can help people:
- lower LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and raise HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol),
- lower blood pressure,
- reduce risks of diabetes by lowering blood sugars and body fat levels,
- relieve arthritis and back pain,
- increase muscle tone and bone density,
- increase energy, stamina and metabolism, and
- improve mood, reduce stress and facilitate sound, restful sleep
The HEAL parent group, as part of the Health Department’s Childhood Obesity Prevention and Advocacy (COPA) Program, is supported by the Earl B. and Loraine H. Miller Foundation and has been in place since last year. The HEAL parent group is focused on providing opportunities for parents to be healthy role models and on improving the health of the neighborhood around the school.
