The 23rd Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace & Unity Parade Celebration takes place Saturday, January 15, 2011, in the City of Long Beach. This year’s theme is “We Can Not Walk Alone.”
The 2011 celebration theme is in Dr. King’s own words, We Can Not Walk Alone. The theme was taken for Dr. King’s I Have A Dream speech in which he acknowledges the inner connection that the human race share and that our success depends on our brother’s success. It reminds us that our destinies are intertwined and our freedom is inextricably bound therefore, we can not walk alone.
“I chose this theme to bring attention to one of Dr. King’s greatest prophecies about the connection that we all share because in these difficult times we will never make it to the mountain without our brothers. We all have the responsibility to help one another because we can not walk alone”, said Councilman Andrews.
The parade is followed by a multi-cultural celebration at King Park on Saturday, January 15. The event includes music and dance performances; a children and teen area with free carnival rides and give-a-ways. There will be lots of food, booths and community services information. A Health Pavilion will provide free health tests and flu shots.
