We Love Long Beach Arts: Campaign keeps the arts alive in LB
2010-08-09 · By Editor
On Wednesday August 11, 2010 from 5:30-7:30pm at the Long Beach Museum of Art, many of Long Beach’s heavy hitters will be joining forces for a very important cause: Arts in the Long Run.
“Arts in the Long Run” is an event hosted by the Arts Council for Long Beach in partnership with We Love Long Beach and The Jazz Angels to raise awareness about recent drastic cuts to community-based arts programs, as well as in-school and afterschool arts education and kickoff “We Love Long Beach Arts,” a charity campaign that will raise funds and help restore funding to community and school based arts programs in Long Beach.
Long Beach has been faced with the challenge of keeping arts programs afloat for years and now many of these programs are in crises. In the midst of a troubled economy, arts programs have experienced anywhere from a 30-60% decrease in funding in recent years.
Why support the Arts in Long Beach, you ask?
The answer is very simple. From the smallest neighborhood to the largest performance hall, the arts pulse through our community and these programs need support from their community to keep going! Public school budget cuts have reduced the exposure our children have to music and music instruction. Yet research shows that children involved in the arts perform better in ALL their subjects, have better daily attendance and are more likely to graduate.
The Arts Council for Long Beach is seeking community support to ensure that these programs do not go away. The Arts in the Long Run is open to the public and has a great line up in store which includes performances by many of the children in programs such as The Jazz Angels and Khmer Arts Academy.
We Love Long Beach Arts
The event’s main focus is to kick off the upcoming fundraising effort “We Love Long Beach Arts” which is the campaign being spearheaded by the Arts Council for Long Beach. The objective is to recruit runners, bikers and walkers to sign up for the International City Bank Long Beach Marathon on October 17, 2010 and to raise money on their behalf for these programs. The setting for the “Arts in the Long Run” event, the Long Beach Museum of Art, is located on the annual route for the race and will serve as the perfect reminder of how great the experience is for Marathon participants.
“We are excited to introduce We Love Long Beach Arts to community supporters, parents and teachers”, says Craig Watson, Executive Director of the Arts Council for Long Beach. “Our goal is to raise $100,000 to restore funding to the several local music and arts programs that have seen a dramatic decrease over the last year”, he adds.
