Employee Cash Reward Wellness Program Launched at Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children’s Hospital

Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach estimate that two-thirds of their 5,000 employees are overweight or obese. To help employees start the New Year off right, Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children’s, as part of their Good Life Campaign, launched incentaHEALTH.
“As we care for patients and families in our hospitals, we sometimes forget to care for ourselves,” says Mark Roberts, MD, physician ambassador of the Good Life Employee Wellness Program at Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach. “The incentaHEALTH program encourages manageable changes to lifestyle in how we eat and exercise, that lead to better health and slow, steady weight loss for those who need it.”
incentaHEALTH is an employee wellness program emphasizing lifestyle changes that lead to life-long healthy weight. Participants have access to an online fitness guide, daily e-mail coaching, communication with a personal trainer, an online success journal, and weekly e-mail progress reports. All employee participants receive incentives every quarter and can earn cash rewards for both successful weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight.

incentaHEALTH is not a diet program, instead it focuses on nutrition. Six days a week, the program encourages employees to make reasonable food selections and control their portion size. Then allows one day a week for employees to enjoy food selections they crave and return to healthy eating habits the next day.
The second focal point of the program is exercise. Employees are encouraged to be more active by taking walks on breaks using the “fitness walk” path on campus and taking the stairs instead of the elevator to burn more calories each day. Enrollees receive daily personalized e-mail with nutrition and exercise recommendations, encouragement to succeed, meal ideas, and goals.
