West Long Beach Welcomes New Farmers Market and Center Space

On April 21st, Councilmember Johnson invites the community to welcome the Greener Good Farmers’ Market and Center Space to West Long Beach. Located at Admiral Kidd Park, the Greener Good Farmers’ Market will provide fresh fruit and vegetables to a community that lacks fresh food options. “Over 25,000 residents live in West Long Beach and lack sufficient access to fresh foods; the Farmers’ Market will provide access to healthy food options for the many families in the surrounding community,” said Councilmember James Johnson.  “Long Beach, as a Let’s Move city, will continue to explore ways to promote healthy neighborhoods.”

Also, Center Space, a project of the Catalyst Network of Communities, will provide a series of free classes and events every Saturday at Admiral Kidd Park, including fitness classes like Yoga and Zumba, a medical clinic, children’s educational and fitness workshops and much more.  Catalyst founder and Center Space Coordinator Eric Leocadio said, “We wanted to create a place for residents to regularly connect in productive ways. With a place to gather every Saturday morning, people can sign up for community projects and activities, shop for healthy food, enjoy music and dancing, exercise, take free classes, and offer their own input and feedback for improving their neighborhood.”

The inaugural event on April 21st will also feature the Cabrillo High School Steel Drum band and other live musicians.  St Mary’s Hospital will have a free mobile clinic available to residents and several gourmet food trucks, including the Lime Truck and Buttermilk, will be onsite.

In addition, Councilmember Johnson and Union Bank will be introducing a new full-service ATM to West Long Beach.  “In addition to addressing our lack of fresh food options, we will be providing banking options where they have been absent.  This new ATM will allow residents full access to banking service in their own community and is a step toward equitable access to financial institutions for all Long Beach residents.”  Union Bank will also be present at Center Space to open accounts for those who currently don’t have one.  The ATM will be located just south of Admiral Kidd Park at the West Police Station, 1835 Santa Fe Avenue.

Perfect – finally we here at the West Side get some recognition! We have lived here for almost 25 years and I feel like we are the “stepchildren” of Long Beach! Thank you James Johnson for recognizing the need and supporting our ‘visibility’ at City Hall!

Finally! I have wanted to get to a Farmers Market for years but never had the time and/or access to one. Now I can make a Saturday morning walk every week to support local farmers as well as get fresh vegetables for the week. I really hope the community takes advantage of this and it becomes a success.
