Westerly School’s dedicated leadership class and the energetic children from Precious Lamb Preschool got together for a day of inspiration and motivation by way of a traveling career day. Westerly students wanted to inspire these youngsters who are fighting homelessness, by providing them the opportunity to meet professionals that hold positions in their dream careers.

The project started when Westerly students reached out to the Precious Lamb teachers and asked them what their preschool students “wanted to be when they grow up”. Among the list of dream jobs were a Doctor, Firefighter, and Chef. Westerly leadership students quickly began making contacts in the community to develop an itinerary that would allow the two groups to visit places aligning with the dreams of these youth. Furthermore, the students connected with The Big Red Bus Company who provided a generous donation toward transportation for the day. “I was amazed at how quickly the community came together to support our students in building this day for the kids at Precious Lamb, everyone responded with incredible enthusiasm about the project”, stated David Perram, Director of Student Affairs at Westerly School and project coordinator.

The travelling career day kicked off with a tour of the Simulation Lab at Long Beach Memorial Hospital where the leadership students and preschoolers saw all of the interactive tools and devices that doctors use for training purposes. Further inspiring the kids, they were treated with a visit from Dr. Divya-Devi Joshi, the Chief Medical Director at Miller Children’s Hospital. She shared with them the benefit of hard work and dedication that it takes to obtain the job of your dreams. When asked by the students the biggest benefit to being a doctor, “I enjoy working with others in a group setting in order to make a difference in the lives of so many” answered Dr. Joshi. The students left the hospital with giant smiles and a new found determination.

The group filed back onto the Big Red Bus and headed over to Fire Station 17 where they were again given an interactive tour by the dedicated firefighters on duty. From the living quarters to the fire truck and a stop at the infamous fire pole, the kids were wide eyed and full of excitement throughout. The staff at Fire Station 17 was eager and dedicated to motivate and encourage the group during the visit.

The final stop of the day was Primal Alchemy catering, where Chef Paul Buchanan gave the group a tour of his kitchen. As the Chef and his team were preparing for an event of 1,000 people, the students saw the kitchen in full swing. They discussed the benefits of local and healthy food choices. The visit concluded with a delicious lunch on the beach prepared by Primal Alchemy.!

The visits throughout the day was geared toward the dreams of the kids at Precious Lamb; however, the Westerly students experienced tremendous growth as well. “It felt great to see how special the day was to them, they were really excited and wanted to be involved in all aspects of the day,” stated Logan Senn, 8th grader at Westerly. Senn went on to mention that “days like this make me want to do this more often”.

The growing relationship between Westerly School and Precious Lamb is a testament to the collaborative and inclusive city that we live in. More projects amongst the two organizations are surely to come, as we look forward to bettering the future of Long Beach.
