On Saturday, Oct. 3, the Arts Council of Long Beach announced the winners of the third annual Port of Long Beach PHOTOGALLERY competition. This unique program, on exhibit at the Museum of Latin American Art (MoLAA) showcases work by nearly 80 professional and amateur photographers who captured images at the second-busiest port in the nation. This year’s program also featured the work of ten Long Beach high school students.
Los Angeles resident Norman Harris won first place for “Dock,” a twilight shot of a berthed container ship with the Commodore Schuyler F. Heim Bridge in the background. The second-place winner was Long Beach resident Denise Dube for her black-and-white entry, “Tug Club,” showing three tugboats at anchor awaiting assignment. Laurie Mortara of Huntington Beach took third place for “Last Flight of the Night,” which captures the shadows of two gulls in motion against the backdrop of a ship in the harbor.
“Port of Long Beach PHOTOGALLERY” marks the third consecutive year the Port has teamed with the Arts Council for Long Beach to promote cultural arts through photography for Long Beach Arts Month. This year, the Port formed a new partnership with MoLAA and the photos are featured in MoLAA’s new “Port to Learning: The Port of Long Beach Art Education Gallery.”
The Port of Long Beach PHOTOGALLERY runs through Jan. 3, 2016. Show hours are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Extended hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The museum is open free to the public on Sundays. MOLAA is located at 628 Alamitos Ave., Long Beach 90802.
